Starting out young.... Congratulations Daisey Adams!
At SFP, we want to encourage kids to get outside and fish.... on the ice or open water or both! On February 8, 2014, the city of Big Lake, MN held it's first annual "Get Outdoors" event. This is an event where parents can participate in a variety of outdoor activities with their kids for free! This year, 30 kids and their parents took part! Shamrock Fishing Products was more than happy to be involved, we provided trophies for the First Fish Caught, Second Fish Caught and Third Fish Caught for the ice fishing portion of the afternoon. Our hard water pro-staffer Travis Adams was there to help out at the tournament, and his daughter Daisey won the First Fish trophy fishing with a Shammy Shaker Jester! Congratulations to the kids who won the other two trophies, and to ALL of the kids who participated in this great event! Thank you to the parents who brought their kids out - what a great time!

According to the 2011 U.S. Fish and Wildlife service, “fishing attracted 33.1 million individuals 16 years old and …” We are definitely a nation of people who throw a lot of lures!
With so many Americans on the lake, tackle companies have responded and stepped up their production of sport fishing paraphernalia. If you go to the nearest sporting goods or bait & tackle store you will see shelf after shelf of every kind of fishing lure imaginable.
Why then is there a need for custom lures?
Where big-box companies fall short, the small custom lure companies excel. Custom designers can give customers the service and attention to detail – hand-painting every lure to their specifications and colors. Customs are one-of-a-kind, and oftentimes more durable than the shelf brand.
In the last 10 years, custom-designed and painted lures have received greater recognition due to an increase in tournament fishing and the popularity of the sport. While tournament pros regard a one-of-a-kind lure as that extra “edge” to beat their competition, the casual fishing enthusiast has come to realize the unique potential of these lures. It’s now the “old new secret” to out-fishing your family and friends during an evening on the lake!
Why would a custom lure work better than a from-the-shelf stock lure?
Here’s the key to the best fishing of your life … It is well known that all animals can be repelled (or attracted) through “conditioning.” A fish that has been caught 8 times by a silver spoon will associate that particular lure – and how it flashes, wobbles, and it’s general appearance – with pain and stress. Eventually the fish will be repelled and ignore the lure. This situation is called “fishing pressure.” Most lakes and streams today have some fishing pressure and that old expression – “the fish are wise” – is exactly what this means. The consequence: older, stock lures will slowly become obsolete.
They won’t stay obsolete for too long. All lures (and especially lure colors) are cyclical in nature. After all, a new generation of fish is spawned each year. Each generation is new to ALL lures at first;however, older, bigger and “wiser” trophy fish know the difference – they’ve already been conditioned!
That is where custom lures shine!
A custom lure will have a coloration and signature movement that differentiates them from those off-the-shelf lures. Stock lures are made in vast quantities and can only be paid a minimal amount of attention during the manufacturing process. A custom lure will always have the full attention of the designer, to make sure any subtle nuances or modifications are appropriately applied.
Custom lure painters can also duplicate classic fish-catching colors and patterns on different lure blanks. Having a newer, more-detailed paint job on an older lure body can change an obsolete lure into a fish-catching-machine. Other modifications might include weighing a lure to dive deeper, shaving/sanding the bill on crankbaits so they dive shallower, adding an extra set of eyes, and more.
Custom lure designer’s can do amazing things to lures that will put bigger and better fish in your boat. And really – that’s what we all want.
